Take 15oz of normal suffering:
unsatisfactory friendships; maybe a failed
marriage; children going off-piste; parents
dying. Boredom. Jobs never quite working out.
Add 5oz of the will to stay plugged in
to Facebook, Strictly – all the crap which tells
our age’s story. Stir in common sense
(8oz), technique (ditto) – but please without
under/over-doing the latter. Imagination;
patience. A sprinkling of luck. Don’t (don’t!) forget
two tablespoons of whisky, preferably malt.
Then loneliness. Thick skin against rejection.
Probably poverty, maybe even debt.
And finally, a healthy pinch of salt.
